The debut match served its purpose well enough. While not the stipulation she had hoped for, as she prefers being a solo competitor, Alix Mayne left EXP 27 victorious. People were calling her performance impressive and a sign of things to come, same as her successful debuts in DWA and NPW earlier in the year. Now she can finally move on from that thrown together tag environment and focus on furthering her own career…
‘What do you mean she’s in another six person tag team match at Super Adventure Island?’
You people don’t like living, do you?
While she didn’t outwardly show any disappointment upon being informed of her next match, once she returned to her room she did. Most would find it astounding that the young woman is even able to emote, but a simple sigh told more in a second than many do with minutes of spewing verbiage. Still, even with this, Alix knew she would have to have a conversation about what’s next. Unlike her situations with DWA and NPW, coming to Level Up was a bit of a favor. One that didn’t seem to have a benefit now and with recent developments, it was also one that could endanger others who don’t exactly deserve such harsh treatment.
So with a call she knew wouldn’t be ignored, Alix patiently waited. It barely took a minute for the door to swing open and a chill to fill the rather large room. No words were exchanged between the two as the other closed the door and sat right beside Alix. All that was shared at first was a stare, until Alix produced a small device, placing it between the two.
“This will allow for your words to be communicated in a language I understand. The translation may not be one hundred percent accurate, but it will suffice.” The other offered a nod of acknowledgment, which gave Alix the impression that she may continue. “Our time contracted to the latest company, Level Up Wrestling, has not gone according to plan. That victory did nothing to elevate my status within the company. Meanwhile it served as an opportunity for the opposition to further their skills for future contests.”
Her eyes lowered, body shifting slightly to the left and away from the one beside her. The one who is always there no matter how much she wishes it wasn’t the case. It was all the more alarming then to feel the sensation of a hand on her shoulder, causing her to turn and see that same person. The one who brought about such fear, to be smiling in an almost comforting fashion. “However there is the lingering fact that while you were added to the opening exhibition for their special event, your partners were released for their poor performances. Shouldn’t that be indicative of elevation?”
The response she received led to a quizzical expression. “Your behavior is unusual, normally you are the one to point out the negatives. How is it that our roles have reversed?” Her expression returned to neutral following an all too telling laugh from her counterpart.
“Simple. This is a manipulative tactic so you won’t walk away from this extra outlet of aggression. Even though it comes nowhere close to satiating our hunger, it’s still a decent enough source to salvage. In addition, your emotional outbursts are hindering our ability to commit acts without issue. If sending you down a route of more nonsensical pressure is what it will take to complete our missions, we will do so.”
All Alix could offer was a simple nod. “What if it is not what’s desired? What if my emotional outbursts are my way of conveying discomfort as to your lifestyle choices? What if…”
“You are being far too coy and vague, Alix. You know your pater doesn’t approve of such behavior. If you are meant to be one who continues building upon the foundation he has set, you must learn to be better than just a frail duck. You know full well now that you have been revealed to be his, all the eyes will drift to comparison. This is why you must continue on this venture. Be better. Conquer no matter how cruel the methods are. There are those willing to hurt you, aren’t there? There are ones who already have. Then you sit here and try to dissuade our efforts to give them what they deserve.”
“Those cases are…different. Engaging beyond that is unnecessary. Look, I am certain he will agree with our stance on the matter the next time we meet. Until that moment arrives, I will offer compromise in the form of my continued involvement with Level Up. I shall partake in the six person tag team affair and see where the performance leads. I offer gratitude for the meeting and will see you again soon enough.” Offering another nod, the counterpart got up and made her way towards the door. Placing her hand on the knob, she took one last look back at Alix. “Oh and Alix? I would call for assistance if I were you. You don’t have enough experience when it comes to the disposing of problematic pieces.”
Alix went to respond, but before she could she once again found herself alone. Now turning around, her eyes widened at the sight before her and the young woman immediately dropped to a seat scooting back until she felt it hit the door. Scrambling for the knob, Alix found her breathing growing more and more shallow. Difficult. Until she finally found it in her to turn and push the door open. Escaping the room was a difficult task, but Alix finally managed it. After a moment of composing herself, she decided it would be best to have a full on escape from everything. Especially that one. She wasn’t sure how long she ran for, but there was a wave of relief that washed over her the moment she felt she made it to her nameless destination. The breeze wasn’t always kind to her sensitive allergies but today it was the most calming thing she could experience outside of one..
Unfortunately, she couldn’t indulge in that. Not in the state she was in. Nobody deserves to deal with that, especially one so kind.
So for now she sat, trying to make sense of something beyond her logical grasp, doing everything within her power not to bring herself back to the room. However, as it usually went with peaceful settings hers was soon interrupted by the light ‘clink’ of beer bottles within their cardboard encampment.
Arturo Pimentel was humming Selena y los Dinos, which song was lost though as he was anything but skilled or in the same neighborhood as the correct key. When he saw the blonde, he couldn’t help a small smile. He enjoyed her company, but not nearly as much as he enjoyed the way she made his friend less miserable.
“Hey girl, heeeeey!!” he called, going to plop next to her and set the case of Modelos down. “Cervesas for el gringa?” Her eyes met the source of the question and offered a simple tilt of her head as an initial response. “Your offer has been accepted and in exchange I present gratitude.” Arturo responded with a good natured chuckle before twisting the cap off one of the stubby glass bottles and handing it to her, taking on for himself.
“So he fall asleep after, or you get tired of lookin’ at his ugly face?” He inquired jokingly as he took a long pull from his beverage. Alix shook her head in response before taking a sip of her own. “Neither of the presented scenarios are correct. I.. had an interpersonal conversation and now have a rotting.. wait, I am not meant to disclose information of that nature. What I can state is that this is what has brought me to my present state of distress. Now I need a distraction in order to allow me time to reorganize the priorities within my mind.”
“Oh…So, I had like dope ass timing, eh?” He grinned, taking another long pull and finishing the beer before whipping it into the parking lot below. “Maybe you can go train mas? Got that big exhibition match to show off the New Yorkers and the Baño cleaner. Might get your stock off to the best start possible. Two and Oh, better than Owen Too, eh?”
“That.. is a sound idea. I should train further for my upcoming match. While it is not what I envisioned as far as a stipulation is concerned, I must not fail so preparedness is essential. Especially considering that I may be presented with another situation where I need to rely on myself to handle the competition. I.. am unable to trust either of them at this point.”
“That’s the smartest thing you’ve said tonight, and you say a lot of smart things..” he leaned over, whispering. “I thought you was a terminator when we met, but then I was like ‘naaaaaah, she’s too nice for all the murder-death-kill’.” he chuckled, twisting the top off another beverage. “That Vaughn dude is always up to some shit and–who’s your other partner?”
His words sent an alert within, but she immediately quelled the instinct that crept in the form of a whisper. “Too nice.. your compliment is noted. You believe me incapable of such acts, yet you see the disgruntled maintenance worker as one who may? My other partner in this is named Paul Freedom. Have you taken any additional notes on him beyond footage of previous performances I have gathered?”
“Seems like one of those ‘Biff, the Varsity Quarterback’ types. But instead it’s ‘Biff, the pro wrestler who goes from main eventing a PPV in a big tag match to opening a PPV in a smaller tag match. He’s good, Hija but with your breeding and training? And the whole robot thing? Even if he did break bad on you, you got him.” She found herself on the verge of smirking as he continued.
“Honestly, your opponents seem like a cake walk. Don’t take it easy on yourself but, don’t doubt you either, hija. There’s a reason you got that DWA Ferocity belt all shiny and pretty.” Now finishing off her bottle, she motioned a request for a second after gently placing it down. “This fact seems to escape those in this company. I understand having to earn opportunity, but the concept of only having what’s occurring within your realm being the only truth, it’s nonsensical.” This sip was far longer than the others, seemingly with reason.
Arturo nodded, leaning in his seat and paying the topic an off-handed shrug.
“People only wanna know about what’s right in front of their face, hija. If they can’t beat you for that belt and get the money for doing so here? They don’t care. And they gotta make that Trent foo happy by sayin’ no other place matters…but there’s the fools truth, and your truth, foo…which one you gonna live by, and which one do you KNOW will take you where you’re goin?”
Alix was silent for a moment, looking at the bottle and then taking another short sip. “Your words.. They carry a great deal of wisdom. I am appreciative that you bestowed them upon me. This has been a great help and I believe following the disposal of what has been left in the room, I shall be able to truly focus on the contest and prevail.”
“I’ll pretend to understand that, and just think you left Ziggy napping because..” and with that, Arturo made the least mature imitation of mattress springs before snorting out an even less mature laugh and clinking his bottle to hers in a toast to the odd woman and their odd friendship. Alix finally offered the closest thing to a bonding motion with him in the form of an eyeroll, allowing herself to be lost in the moment before it was once again time to focus.
She hated this moment, every single time she was faced with it. It didn’t matter the company, the position on the card, nothing. Being in front of the camera was the worst thing for Alix Mayne. Over time, though she won’t ever admit it, she learned it wasn’t because of anxiety. It was the fear of certain truths surfacing in the language she used. The body language included. While she wasn’t downright lying to the masses about who and what she was, there was the ever growing concern she brought about. The last thing that was needed were unnecessary eyes focused on that. It would be at that point she could no longer control it. If he were present, he’d probably laugh at that since he knew more than any other that her version of control was laughable. Still, she had to at least make a continued attempt. It was the least she could do for herself, for those who believe in her abilities and most of all, those who are foolish enough to think she’s a good person. The flashing red light, settling to a solid on-position, signaled that it was time to express her professional thoughts on the upcoming match.
“Super Adventure Island is the first pay-per-view event that I will be taking part in as an active competitor in Level Up Wrestling. Every singles championship within the company shall be decided and beyond that, contenders will have the opportunity to emerge in different contests. While I didn’t initially see my own match as one of these chances, since having a few discussions, my mind has changed. Not entirely, as this is still a less than ideal situation for me as a singles competitor, but should this team come away victorious there should be forward movement on the metaphorical company ladder. Of course the amount at which each is individually propelled will differ based on several factors, but there will be some change. I will put forth the effort to make sure that like last time, I am the one who benefits the most from this contest. Despite my intentions being selfish, I will be the best partner I can, so in that regard my partners should feel a sense of relief. Now onto the portion of this where I discuss the opposition in a complimentary, yet slightly insulting fashion so that I may appear superior because that is, for some ridiculous reason, customary.”
Letting herself gather her thoughts as best as she could, Alix shifted from one variant of a straight expression to another. It didn’t seem like much of a difference, but in her mind it was like night and day. “I will start with the opponent I am most familiar with on a personal level, which is Cypher. Though we have only physically met a few times, beyond the scope of a professional setting, he has offered kindness and friendship. However, this will not cause me to lessen my efforts and I do not expect the same from him, either. While I am unsure what he will state when it comes to me, I do know beyond the pageantry that promos offer that he will see me as a serious competitor. Therefore, it would be disrespectful to not do the same in return. I also know that outside of this company, he has come into recent success and will be looking to continue that success in a similar way that I am. While those within companies only look at their reality as important, I was asked what reality I wish to show as the truth and I choose my own. I choose the broader picture and I will not allow this to be the only image those who are fans of the product get to see. Professional wrestling is a competitive community and should be seen as such. So to Cypher, I wish you well following this match, but do know I will do everything it takes to make sure the team I am a part of comes out victorious.”
Though one couldn’t tell by looking at her, there was a small sense of inner conflict, one that she knew would be handled later on. It was difficult both welcoming human emotion and also distancing from them in the name of progress. Such an overwhelming process, but Alix couldn’t afford to think about that too much. She had to focus on progress.
It’s the only way.
“Now moving onto the next opponent. Seeing as how I have not met the other two apart from simple pleasantries, I will now go in alphabetical order. This leads to Michelle Riggs. Michelle is from a wrestling family. Those who are unaware of the details behind the basic information would probably see us on a similar plane. I do not. Yes, I have family that are also involved in professional wrestling, but I was not familiar with them beforehand and the level at which we are bonded also heavily links with factors that will inevitably drive us apart should one or more of us not separate ourselves from the industry. One matter I will recognize is the fact that she will always feel as though there is a point to prove and it is by that will alone she proves a dangerous adversary. Combine this with undeniable talent and she is one that I most assuredly will be looking out for during this match.” Looking off to the side for a brief moment, Alix took in a breath before continuing.
“The last of the three is Paul Montouri and removing the initial point I made with Michelle, I remain steady in the mindset that he is another one to look out for. Still, regardless of that fact I shall not allow it to deter my efforts in this match. Remember how I initially stated that I see this match as an opportunity. While it will propel me further along, it also allows me to study you all further. Video archives can only do so much when we are ever evolving. I also know that you will all learn from this match and further improve your in-ring strategies. My final message to the three of you is a simple one. You will all have varying degrees of victories, success and greatness within this industry. Super Adventure Island can be one of those nights, but not in the way any of you envision it. Do with that what you will.” She paused briefly, allowing the words to sink in before offering a bit more. The most important one in her opinion. “As far as my partners are concerned, you understand what this is just as well as I do. Be selfish without being selfish and we will all do fine. Tread lightly..” Alix Mayne actually offered a smile following that statement, a very eerie smile and just like the last time, the feed cut in sync with her final words. While she still had no trust for those she’s trapped in this match with, at the end of the day, she knew what was the smartest route to take. Observe while winning and then from there, be on guard when it comes to them all. Nobody can be trusted, especially not herself.
