“……..Helen.”
It was the only word he could muster. The shock of seeing her here in the flesh had caused temporary paralysis for Isaac.
He had been intensely working out ready for his shot at glory in the Last of us Gauntlet.
His mouth dried up quicker than the rain in the desert. In that instant his youth spent with Helen flashed before him.
In Isaacs eyes Helen had the same dark brown bob haircut. Perfectly shaped. She used to say it took her no effort to do but Isaac knew differently. It was just one of the many things he thought perfect in her.
There she was though, stood here in his gym. Late teens, chewing gum. Hands in her short brown leather coat, the collar up. The coat was always open showing some white t-shirt with a big red heart emblem in the middle. Her jeans were baggy and the sneakers red and white. This was how she normally dressed. It was casual but flawlessly pulled off. She was for the time unique.
That instant seemed like an eternity. Isaac desperately didn’t want to let it go. The flood of emotion and memory had brought it all back. The pain and suffering of the past were replaced with happiness and love of this woman.
In this eternity he was younger, he wasn’t tainted by the pain he had suffered. The spell in prison. The battle with his demons. The last painful time he had seen her outside of the home she had made with Stocky. None of it seemed important right now. In that second in her presence he was back at prom. Back where the future was full of opportunity, hope and wishes.
It then suddenly dawned on Isaac. Helen was here. As quickly as the happiness came it disappeared.
Helen : “Ummmmm Hey!”
Isaac reacted the only way he knew how. He decided to self destruct.
Isaac : “Move.”
The smile quickly disappeared from Helens face. Isaac looked again at her. She was older. She was still beautiful but the signs of early middle age had begun to show themselves.
Helen : “Isaac!”
He walked on passed her. He couldn’t bring himself to speak to her. Not now.
Isaac : “I can’t. I have to go.”
He had a match to prepare for and the last time he spoke to her didn’t exactly go well…….
——————————————————————
Isaac was free.
He has served his time. It was longer than expected but Isaac wasn’t exactly a good boy during his time. Sure the first few months went well but then Stocky had pushed his buttons. He had snapped and he had hurt people whilst inside.
A lot of Isaacs time in prison was spent alone. He had often had his visitor rights taken away but one person constantly showed up. Like a bad penny. His father.
A regular visitor in both a family and religious capacity. He had pulled strings to get a lenient sentence and locked up here. He knew the governor. Isaac hated him and equally the padre had eventually disowned Isaac.
Today was the first day of the rest of his life. Today he was free. He had a small bag of items and a dream. He was done with the prison life. He wasn’t going back. He was now determined to set himself on the right path. He had to go and see her.
The cab pulled up outside the house. Isaac almost jumped out and paid the driver at the window of the drivers side door. He used his last scrap of money to get here.
Stood outside the house Isaac took a deep breath in. He walked to the door and knocked. Time stood still. He was excited to see her.
The door flew open. Phil. Helens dad.
His face was somewhat confused. It took a moment for it to hit him. The moment he recognised Isaac he erupted with excitement
Phil : “Isaac! My god!”
Isaac : “Hi Phil”
Phil : “My god look at you! Nothing like the kid I last saw it’s good to see you! Come in come in.”
Phil opened the door wider and stepped aside. Isaac stood for a moment. He didn’t know what to expect when he knocked on the door initially but he wasn’t expecting Phil to be so friendly.
Phil : “cmon then!”
Phil gestured to Isaac to come in. Isaac obliged. The house was exactly as he remembered. The walls, floor and bannister leading upstairs all still adorned with dark stained wood. The grandfather clock exactly where he remembered it on the left and you walk in.
Phil closed the door and walked down the corridor towards the back of the house where the kitchen was.
“Through here.”
Isaac headed to the kitchen. It was still the same layout. The island in the middle the cooker to the right. The colour had changed. He remembered it white but now different shades of green and brass. Phil had his head in the fridge. He turned and placed two beers down on the island.
Phil : “Drink up buddy”
Phil tapped his bottle against Isaacs. Isaac picked it up and took a sip. It was at that moment Isaac realised. This was his first legal beer. It was unlikely that his father would have been the person to stand and have the first cold one with Isaac but it made him reflect on the things he had missed out on. It was at a certain age something people just took for granted. Isaac took another sip. Held it in his mouth a moment and swallowed.
Phil : “what’s the plan then kiddo?”
Isaac : “where is she Phil?” Isaac didn’t break his focus from the beer bottle.
Phil finished his mouthful and slowly placed the bottle down. He looked at it and turned it around so the front label faced him.
Phil : “You know I routed for you.” Phil’s index finger pointing at Isaac. “You were like a son. She was happy. I was happy for you both. Your prom night I stood there and I knew. I knew you two were destined to explore the big wide world.”
Isaac looked up and directly into the eyes of Phil.
Isaac: “I’ll ask you again. Where. Is. She?”
Phil : “Far from you. Raising her family. She needs to be clear of you. She told me about the church. She told me what you did to end up in the slammer. You’re a danger Isaac. So I’ve kept her clear of you……”
Isaac punched Phil square in the jaw. Phil didn’t see it coming and didn’t stand a chance. Isaac stood over him and reigned down the fists.
“Where.” *punch*
“Is” *punch*
“She” *punch*
It wasn’t long before Phil’s gritty resistance fell. Isaac left with a bottle of beer, bloodied hands and the information he needed.
——————————————————————
It had been a few weeks since Isaac had seen Helen. She had left her number in his bag at the gym.
He had tried to broach the subject of what she wanted. It had been over 10 years since he had seen her, but every-time he tried bringing it up she would avoid the question or change the subject.
He tried asking about family but she was dead set on discussing the past. Well the past right up until the night Isaac was arrested.
She did on occasion want to discuss Isaacs father. She knew he had passed away a few years prior. Isaac didn’t care though at the time of the padres passing he spent the majority of his days searching for the next fix.
Helen remembered Isaacs father like he was some sort of superhero. Isaac remembered differently. He suffered the beatings and the abuse for years. He remembered the prison visits and how they often went. The man was beyond god. He was pure evil. It’s why he found David Wilcox so endearing. He was in many ways much more fatherly than his own father. Isaac had decided that one day he would talk about it…..when the time was right.
“So the gauntlet didn’t go well?”
“Far from….it went very well Helen.” Isaac responded sharply.
Helen : “But you didn’t ….well….win?”
Isaac : “I didn’t but did you see how it went?”
Helen : “I did. I was impressed you looked….fantastic. The gyms clearly been working for you….hmmmm”
Isaac : “Don’t.”
Helen : “Okay okay I’m kidding. I saw your last match! Damn close shame you and ermm Drake couldn’t win the titles.”
Isaac : “We weren’t pinned. Next time we will win. I guarantee.”
Helen laughing : “I’m sure! He’s a bit tasty that Drake. Big. Muscular.”
Isaac : “Since when was that your type?”
Helen : “You’re my type.”
Isaac : “Stop. Helen what do you want? You appear after what a year. You’re fucking with my head woman. You could have waited!! You didn’t! You hooked up with stocky and spat his bastard child out! We’ve been at this for weeks. Now you tell me what the FUCK you want or you can get to FUCK.”
“Jesus man calm down.” Drake’s voice could be heard in the background.
“I…..I just wanted to see you. I’d seen you started wrestling and…….”
Isaac slammed the phone down.
Drake : “You okay brother?”
Isaac : “No. That bitch is fucking with my head. You know she appears outta nowhere after like a decade and expects us all to be fine! My head wasn’t in the game for our title match brother. I hold her responsible.”
Drake leaned back in his chair and up his feet up.
Drake : “Women man. I should know, take Gina. I dumped her ass in the worst way. She was just the worst.”
Isaac: “James had you believing that. You should rekindle that. She was good for you brother.”
Drake sat back up. “She’s back in her old job. Receptionist. Besides nah women mate, they make you go soft.”
Isaac : “That they do brother!”
Drake : “That Rebecca from the gym….”
Isaac : “Pfffft all yours!“
Drake : “Haha thanks!”
The mobile phone in Isaacs hand began to ring again…..
He looked down at the screen. He rolled his eyes.
Isaac : “Hello….”
“What now?”
“No more messing around. I want to know…..”
“Okay I’ll be there.”
Isaac put the phone down. “I’ve got to go brother. She wants to see me. She wants to talk.”
Drake : “After this - Get your head in the game! You’ve got a match. The MAIN event. Not only that GC need you at 100%. Get her out of your system.”
Isaac : “I’ll go and see her now. Then I promise you brother. I will be at 100% for Centurion.”
Drake : “You’d better be! It’s the main event!”
Isaac smiled at Drake. “You know something brother. I’m glad I have you around. You remind me of the important things. My first ever main event as a singles competitor. You’ll be there?”
Drake : “At ringside. Wouldn’t miss it.”
Isaac : “Good! I’m glad! Stay out of it though. I need to do this on my own.”
Drake : “When it’s over I’m going to break him. Call it revenge for his little assault on you at the TLOU.”
Isaac : “Drake I mean it. You can be there but don’t get involved. I’ve EARNED this. This is the stuff I’ve wait for since I stepped into your home. Finally the hard work is being justified. We dumped James precisely for these matches these moments. I HAVE to do this on my own. You know I’ve never won a singles match. Ever. The gauntlet was my first pin fall without any help.“
Drake : “Wait what? Nah.”
Isaac : “It was. I’ve won matches but never alone. Promise you’ll stay out of the March Drake.”
Drake : “but….”
Isaac : “Drake…promise me!!”
Drake holding his hands up “okay okay! Your main event your shot brother. I’ll be there to support only! The GC too.”
Isaac : “Thanks!” His phone rang again. “I’ve gotta go and see her…..then I’m going to the gym. I’ll make sure Rebecca gets your number eh?”
Drake laughed “Go and see her and then…...”
Isaac : “It’s all about Centurion. I’m off….”
——————————————————————
The rain was so heavy. The cars wipers could hardly keep up.
He pulled up outside the house. It was just like any normal suburban street in almost any town in the country.
Boring. Isaac thought.
Sitting in the car Isaac took a swig of the cheap spirit. The first proper drink he purchased. Well ok stole. First day out and he had already risked his liberty. He looked out of the window of the car (also stolen). The house had a light on.
Time for some more courage. He thought as he took one final big gulp of the foul tasting liquor.
He fell out of the car and stumbled up to his feet. He fell over the picket fence at the front of the property. He was a mess, blind drunk. It hadn’t taken much but this was of course the first time he had any sip in years. He banged at the door.
It was of course Helen that opened it.,
She took a step back.
“Get in here. Quickly you’ll catch a cold in this rain.” She yanked Isaac in and closed the door.
She threw a towel over him.
“Jesus Isaac what the…..get dry. I’ll make you a strong coffee.”
“I had to… come….see you.” Isaac stuttered it out.
“Not now just get dry.” Helen snapped back. The kettle now starting to boil.
She handed Isaac the coffee and sighed. “You can’t be here. Stocky will be back soon. He’s out drinking with Pan and Hogg. And what the fuck zac? You don’t think I don’t know about Phil?”
“Helen I had to see you. I had to talk to you. To start my new life. With you.”
Helen : “I have a family Isaac. I’m goddamn married! You’re a convict! You blew it!”
Isaac slammed his fist down on the table surface. “Your piece of work husband set me up.”
Helen whispered “Not this again.”
“Isaac. Go home. Your father is waiting for you.”
Isaac : “Screw him! He’s a bastard! Helen look here look.” He pointed to his eyes.
“I want you to look at me here and tell me you don’t have feelings for me.”
Helen sighed again and looked Isaac directly in the eyes.
Helen : “I will always love you Isaac. I will always care. Even after you beat my father to a pull today. I know that’s not the true person I know. I know that I want to run with you Isaac. I want it to be like it was before all of the trouble started. I want to go but I can’t. I can’t leave my kids.”
Isaac stood for a moment. It was in that moment he realised the truth. He placed his hand on her shoulder and have a slight squeeze and walked out.
The rain hadn’t stopped but it didn’t matter. He began to walk down the road.
He heard the splashes of footsteps behind him and he turned. She was there. Infront of him. She reached up and kissed him.
She stepped back.
The punch was a surprise and swift. It came from his left. Stocky and his goon squad had picked the perfect time to return.
“ISUCK! Good to see you!” Stocky standing over him. Pan and Hogg slightly behind him.
“Thought you’d spend some time with my wife did you?” Stocky thundered down more punches.
The screams of leave him alone were quickly subdued courtesy of a back hand across the cheek.
Isaac attempted to muster the strength to fight back. It was futile. He wasn’t in any state to fight. The beating came swiftly. The three friends did not hold back. Isaac unconscious and unable to defend himself continued to receive the blows.
He woke up groggy and bruised. It was early morning. He was….tied? To a post.
Stocky : “Wakey wakey ISUCK!”
Isaac looked up and straight into the eyes of Stocky
Stocky : “First and last warning. Don’t come back. Because if you do you piece of shit. Both you and her will know about it. If she contacts you, you walk away. If you contact her she will walk away. I’ll make sure of it! You had your chance ISUCK and I always win.”
He stood up and delivered one final parting kick to Isaacs midriff
“Stay away Isaac if you know what’s good for her.”
He got back into his car and sped away.
It was the only word he could muster. The shock of seeing her here in the flesh had caused temporary paralysis for Isaac.
