One would call EXP 23 and the victory over Nocturne exactly what the Wisdom Champion Ahmya needed to get back in the groove of things heading into her next title defense against Buster Gloves. Buster, who punched his ticket to the championship match was a capable athlete and if the champion wanted to give the best performance she could, she needed victories like this. That same one may also be under the impression that there was a sort of tension going into the upcoming tag team match at EXP 24, which would see Ahmya teaming with her Doom title challenger against Emily Simms and Chelsea Skye.
However, if anyone outside her personal circle saw the way she was looking at the laughing baby who was chilling on the blanketed floor with her for some tummy time, they would know wrestling was the furthest thing from her mind. While there were several intense meetings and a serious disagreement between Bert and the latest member of the all inclusive stuffed animal committee Joe the T-Rex, who Bert officially dubbed as tyrannical, at the end of the day it was agreed that things needed to change.
A more observant couple would no doubt have seen the universe speaking to them in the form of Ahmya’s nephew that glanced between them, gurgling loudly as if commenting on their density. Robert reached out, resting a hand on the child’s head gently, wanting to feel that otherworldly soft hair on the top of his small head.
“You know, you could just abdicate. No one would think any less of you, Naoko. I know I wouldn’t.” Robert’s words caused Naoko to look over at him confused, the action causing the adorable infant to look a bit lost too. Finally letting things register, she offered him a smile. “I remember when we spoke about similar things before we lost our portal gloves. Not feeling anything different about stepping away from certain portions of the mission. I know we completed that one, and I don’t actually have one now, but would it really be okay? I still have this tag team match and the one with Buster, should I get to those first? I..” there was a brief pause as her gaze lowered. “I just don’t feel right anymore. I thought the spirited contest with Nocturne would help, and it did for the short time we shared together. But as soon as it was over and I looked over to see what was next.. I felt this twisting pain, and a sensation of air being taken away from me. What do you think that means?”
“The same thing you’ve been telling me without the symbolism..” he replied softly, laying his face flat on the blanket to be eye level with the little one. “You don’t want to be there anymore without me…but you don’t like letting yourself quit.”
He let out a slight chuckle as he addressed the young one next. “Be a whole lot easier if your aunt wasn’t so tough, AJ. Hard to count on losing when you’re so frickin' sweet in the ring.” Naoko was quick to smile warmly as she watched Robert interact with their nephew, a small laugh leaving her too. “You are always so kind and know just what to say, Robert. It appears Asahi agrees. It is true that simply walking away feels odd to me, I’m not even sure if it’s the competitive nature kicking in anymore either. I sort of.. I think it might be that whole doing the right thing you spoke to me about when I was first feeling strange. The right thing is for me to fight until I lose. I think..” Now it was Naoko who turned the conversation over to the baby as she began to gently pet his head. “What do you think is the right thing, little one?”
He yelled. Very loudly.
This…was both unexpected and very expected considering who he was.
Naoko had no idea how to respond.
“We'll be sure to take it into consideration, squirt.” Robert responded through a chuckle the child’s antics drew from him. He looked off to the right, reaching out and grabbing the stuffed rabbit, a lower ranking member of the court, and brought him forth to court the fancy of the little one. “There’s gonna be a lot of people upset, no getting around that. They call you America's sweetheart on all these podcasts..”
“Hell, even that Applesauce Jr kid won’t be mean to you. And that richie rich douchebag is mean as fu–heck..” Robert caught himself, then went silent as he questioned whether douchebag was a curse or not?
“No one wants to see you go, is what I mean.” Naoko couldn’t help but voice her confusion, eyes still focusing on the cute little loud-box and Sir Foofaloof engaging in.. I suppose one would call it an embrace of sorts? “While I’m unsure how an applesauce can be fuheck, I do know that some people there seem to like me a great deal. I am appreciative of them too. Being there gave us a chance to truly get close and.. I mean.. look at us now. Our home is a happy one and I don’t feel so lost anymore. What makes my spot burn is that there is always a ‘but’ when I think about things. There’s always a sigh, there’s always a great deal of anxiety and then we have to numb our minds so I can be okay again. I don’t think that’s correct. I could be wrong and it is just part of the business, but it wasn’t like that before. We had times that made us grr, but it was grr and not ugh. I feel awful.”
“If you could do anything in the world, Nao….anything at all, without worry about what anyone would think or do or any repercussions what would it be?” he asked, leaving the rabbit to its grim saliva drenched fate and turning his attention completely to his wife, reaching a hand out to rest upon her hip. While Naoko was tempted to look over, look away and then look back, she knew that this wasn’t a question Robert wanted her to think about. So the first thing that came to mind was what she expressed to him verbally. “I would do what my sister is doing now.”
It was crazy how few words were said after that, but the ones spoken were so powerful that Naoko had them ringing through her mind from that day until now. As always he provided the greatest of spotlights for her to stand in the center of. A reflection of how highly he thought of her and something she cherished more than words could ever express. Equally as crazy was the plan the two had come up with going into the next show up until her title defense against Buster Gloves and.. Perhaps beyond that as well.
But that was their secret to keep.
For now, she had to continue and hope she could give the best performance she could. That twisting feeling was surfacing once again, but she couldn’t put focus to it now. Just a couple more, you got this Naoko. Then it’ll be up to..
“I wanted to take the time right now to offer thanks. I know it’s a little weird to do so and it not be Thanksgiving, but even without all the turkey, ham, stuffing, biscuits, pie, cranberry sauce, chicken, ice cream, pizza..” Quickly drifting into the land of delectable goods, Naoko was snapped back into focus by the adorable man behind the camera, offering a sweet smile and quick bow as an initial apology for the slip. “Right, it’s not Thanksgiving. Man I hope we get to have that again soon. Back to business, and me expressing my gratitude. Now I know when I come here and am in front of the cameras, I’m Ahmya. The current Level Up Blue Wisdom Champion and the Roundest Robin. When the cameras are not around, I’m Naoko.. And that’s who would like to talk to you right now. I’m not the best at this so do forgive me. I want you to know that I love you all dearly. Not in the same way I love Robert or my family, but as much as I can for a way that isn’t like that. With that love, it makes it so hard for me to say how hurt I’ve been feeling lately. How.. I guess.. I can call it empty.. I’ve been feeling, especially since the last major show we had. Wrestling has given me so much. It’s allowed me to be reintroduced to someone I share the best of bonds with in life. It’s given me the chance to meet a lot of cool people, be silly with so much support and while not all the days have been good ones, I feel like there have been a lot more good than bad which is so nice. I’ve been given amazing opportunities and would never have dreamed of accomplishing all I have. So for that, I thank you. I thank you for taking a big risk with me and while I don’t know if I’ll ever get back to feeling the same way I did in the beginning, I want you to know from the bottom of my heart that you all mean a lot.”
It was easy to see that Naoko was feeling the emotion as it took a few sniffles and a few whispers of encouragement for her to continue. Still, she managed that smile before moving on. “With all that said, I guess I can now talk about what’s next for me here in the crazy world of wrestling. Okay maybe I’ll say something about the last show first. But I promise right after that I’ll discuss the big tag team match. Nocturne, I want to say you are an incredibly tough and respectful opponent. It truly was a breath of fresh air, as Robert would put it, to share the ring with you and I hope you never lose sight of that positive light you hold within. It’s a beautiful thing. Now let’s get to that tag team match.” Naoko couldn’t help but chuckle as she received a funny little expression for her eyes only. “At the next edition of EXP, I find myself teaming up with the very person I’ll be defending my blue championship against to take on two very solid contenders in their own right. I’ve shared the ring with both Emily and Chelsea and am looking forward to seeing how much they have grown as competitors since those last times. Being in the ring with a top contender and a champion both adds a lot of pressure to the match, but also creates a huge opportunity. It can very easily throw your name out there for future championship match chances and both will be looking to take advantage of that in this contest. I don’t think they’ll stoop to questionable tactics, at least I hope they won’t because that seems to not work out so well in the end.. But either way I have prepared myself as best as I can for that and I’m sure my partner for the event has too.”
Naoko paused as her mind reflected on her partner. She knew that even with this upcoming match that she could trust Buster to be a solid hand out there. He was always fair to Robert, even when the world was trying to not be so kind, and he’s also always exhibited a weird type of class to the two of them. Although to be fair, Naoko wasn’t sure what normal class was, but she heard this used as a description once so it’s turned into truth in her mind. Shaking the lingering thoughts away, the wisdom robin proceeded. “Buster, Buster. My soon to be opponent and title challenger. Isn’t it funny how they have us teaming right before that happens? It’s almost like they’re trying to see if there will be dissension and all the grr between us. Thankfully I know we’re both professionals and wouldn’t sink to that. I’ve never even thought to do that to people who grind my gears and with so many looking up to you and you never having done that before, I don’t believe you’d start that trend now. Respect and friendship aside, it’s not your style and a win against a wounded robin wouldn’t serve you anything except people being like why did you do that and doubting the accomplishment. So when we go out there, while we may not be hand in hand like Robert and I are, we’ll have each other's backs and that’s what matters. Then we move onto Doom and.. We’ll see what happens from there. First, let us give our best, tackle this challenge together.” There was a quick shift in the expression of the most rotund in Level Up’s roster, unfamiliar to them but very clear to the man watching. “I’ll see you out there..”
With a playful wave, Naoko gave the wink that caused the feed to be cut. Once the camera was off, she let out a heavy sigh. Not bad. Now she had to shift focus and make a few calls. Time is running out...
