So, I’ve been on a nostalgia kick and managed to dig up some old matches from my fed (NLW) from back in the day. Since this one involved Joe, Jay, and Duane, I thought I’d share it. Enjoy.
——
The bell rings as JC steps out of the ring, allowing Trent to start the match with a fired-up Ice Man, who charges the corner, clubbing Trent in the back of the head. Ice then whips Trent across the ring, dropping him with a shoulderblock as Trent rebounds off of the ropes. Trent pops back up as Ice Man bounces off of the ropes, catching a clothesline from the NLW Legend as he thunders back. Trent gets back to his feet, launching himself off of the ropes with a body press. Ice Man catches him in mid-air, however, and launches him overhead with a fallaway slam! In frustration, Trent scrambles to the corner and tags in JC.
Caelan Tyler: Despite the fact that Ice Man is in what's essentially a handicap match right now he's dictating the pace of this match here in the opening.
Jake Steel: He would've needed to do that regardless Cael. His partner is Phoenix after all, this was handicap match from the start, and it's just a matter of whether or not his short bus-riding partner comes back out here.
Caelan Tyler: That's uncalled for Jake, almost as uncalled for as that vicious assault by Vincent Kane and Danny Boy Vegas. This was Phoenix's night, and those two had to go and ruin it.
Jake Steel: I hope they put him out. Would be doing the whole world a favor.
Caelan Tyler: No Jake, just you.
Jake Steel: And I'm the only one who's opinion counts anyways.
JC climbs into the ring, staring down Ice Man as he moves to the center of the ring, Ice holding his ground there as JC walks over. The two men watch each other intently for another moment before they lock up with a collar and elbow tie-up, each one trying to get the upper-hand but stalemating at first. After another moment or two the reigning Legacy Champion seems to be getting the better of JC, but JC decides to put an end to that with a knee to the gut, doubling over Ice Man and opening him up to a clubbing blow to the back from one half of The Rogues, who whips Ice into the corner, Trent quickly sliding over and tagging him with a forearm to the back of the head, returning the shot Ice Man took on him earlier.
Caelan Tyler: This is exactly where Ice Man doesn't want to be, in the corner of The Rogues, where both men can keep tagging in and out to stay fresh and work over the Legacy Champion.
Jake Steel: Sure it's not where he wants to be, but it's where I want to see him. This way The Rogues can keep handing out the abuse with total impunity!
Caelan Tyler: Well, when you look back at Ice Man's career in NLW, you'd know that he's capable of taking a world of abuse and still having the strength to fight back.
Jake Steel: Yeah, but he's never had to deal with two of the most dangerous men in this business at the same time like this.
JC charges the corner, clotheslining Ice Man. Trent makes sure Ice Man stays upright as the referee comes over to tell him to let him go. Trent does as JC starts to deliver back elbows, smashing his arm into the side of Ice Man's head repeatedly before reaching over and slapping on a front facelock. He then tags in Trent, holding Ice Man as Steel enters the ring and delivers a punt right into Ice's ribs. JC lets go of the hold, exiting the ring as his tag partner peppers Ice Man with rights. Trent then sends the dazed Legacy Champion into the ropes before drilling him with a big wheel kick! With Ice Man down, Trent goes for the pin:
1...
2...
No, Ice Man manages to kick out!
Caelan Tyler: Smart move by Trent there, looking to get the pin early on before Phoenix has a chance to recover enough to come assist his tag partner.
Jake Steel: Recover enough? Did you see the same assault I did Cael? Phoenix isn't coming back out here.
Caelan Tyler: Well if that's the case, perhaps Jack will allow for a substitute partner to take his place.
Jake Steel: Oh, like who?
Caelan Tyler: I don't know... Maybe Draco?
Jake Steel: Pfft. Draco isn't even under contract with NLW, why would Jack allow that?
Caelan Tyler: ...Good point.
Undaunted, Trent pulls Ice Man to his feet, whipping into back into his corner and then kicking him in the midsection, putting the boots to the Legacy Champion as he slinks down in the corner to a seated position. Once there, Trent steps onto the middle rope, grabbing the top rope for leverage and bouncing off, using the added momentum to continue driving his foot into Ice's torso. The booing of the fans gets progressively louder as Trent continues his assault, JC reaching out to tag Trent's shoulder to get into the match. Trent exits the ring, turning on the apron to face the crowd and questioning the purity of their mothers in a manner that's about as vulgar as you'd expect. as JC lifts Ice Man out of the corner with a front facelock, quickly turning that into a stalling vertical suplex. Upon impact JC hooks the leg:
1...
2...
No, Ice Man gets his shoulder up!
Caelan Tyler: The Rogues are definitely showing that they are a cohesive unit here, taking turns piling on the...
Jake Steel: ABUSE~
Caelan Tyler: ...Yes, the abuse. I'm afraid that if The Phoenix doesn't get out here soon The Rogues are going to cruise to the NLW Tag Team Championships.
Jake Steel: They're going to cruise to it regardless. They're a real team, Ice Man and Phoenix aren't. They're pretenders, total jokes.
Caelan Tyler: I don't think I'd call a team composed of two NLW Legends "pretenders". What if TJ Arrington and Jack Sullivan formed a team?
Jake Steel: I'd probably wet myself from excitement.
Caelan Tyler: ...Eww...
JC shakes his head after Ice Man kicks out, standing up and taunting the prone Legacy Champion for a moment before turning his attention to the leering fans, taunting them as Ice Man gets to his feet. JC then Irish whips him, sending him careening across the ring. Ice bounces off of the ropes, and much to JC's chagrin, he ducks under JC's clothesline attempt! Ice Man bounces back, catching the surprised JC in the ribs with a spear! Both men hit the mat, and the referee checks on them both before starting a ten count. Slowly, each man pulls themselves to their feet and begin to trade punches.
Caelan Tyler: Looks like Ice Man's starting to get his second wind here, but will it be enough.
Jake Steel: Noooooope.
Caelan Tyler:How can you be so sure?
Jake Steel: Simple man, it's in their nature. Ducks quack, fish swim, Phoenix sucks and The Rogues win tag matches. You can't fight nature Cael.
Caelan Tyler: ...
The two big men continue to trade blows before Ice Man grabs JC's arm and yanks him in, dropping him with a short-arm clothesline! JC immediately bounces back to his feet, only for the NLW Legend to kick him in the gut and deliver a quick DDT! Acting quickly, Ice Man shifts over, grabbing JC's legs and slingshoting him into the top turnbuckle! JC hits the turnbuckle hard, and doesn't even get a moment to catch his breath before Ice Man grabs him from behind, lifting him up and delivering a picture-perfect German suplex that he bridges:
1...
2...
No, JC manages to kick free in time!
Caelan Tyler: Impressive flurry of offense there by Ice Man, although whether or not he can keep up the pressure is the question at this point.
Jake Steel: Oh come on, did he really think something as simple as a German suplex would keep down a monster of the mat like JC? The man's not even human.
Caelan Tyler: ...What?
Jake Steel: What, you haven't heard? Him and Trent Steel are escaped government experiments to create the perfect wrestler.
Caelan Tyler: Well, I can totally see where you'd think Trent Steel was experimented on, but come on Jake...
Jake Steel: Fine, don't believe me, but I promise you, one day the FBI and the CIA will show up at the arena to apprehend them, and then JC will just big boot their heads off.
Caelan Tyler: I think you need to lay off of the wacky tabaccy Jake.
Jake Steel: BAH~!
The fans, who have been cheering ever since Ice Man regained his footing in the match, roar with approval as The Phoenix makes his way down the ramp with a slight limp, clearly still hurting from the assault before but not wanting to leave his tag partner hanging. He makes his way to their corner as Ice Man drags JC up by his hair, with JC giving him a rake of the eyes for his trouble. He then bounces off of the ropes, damn near taking Ice Man's head off with his Big Boot of Death before tagging in Trent, who slingshots himself into the ring, sentoning Ice Man before taunting him to get up. Ice Man sits up and Steel pounces, delivering a shining wizard right to the kisser before he makes the pin:
1...
2...
No, Phoenix comes in to break up the pin!
Caelan Tyler: That was dangerously close for Ice Man and Phoenix, and Phoenix knew it.
Jake Steel: The only thing keeping those two in this match at this point is the fact that Trent and JC are clearly toying with them.
Caelan Tyler: Toying with them? Don't you think they'd be smart enough to just finish off their opponents with the Tag Team Championships on the line?
Jake Steel: Where's the fun in that? They enjoy dishing out abuse almost as much as I enjoying watching it. They're going to beat these two from pillar to post before they claim their titles.
Caelan Tyler:[/b] How do you do it Jake?
Jake Steel: Do what?
Caelan Tyler: Write off two legends like that.
Jake Steel: It's easy, I just say they suck and lo and behold, they suck.
Caelan Tyler: ...No comment.
Trent scrambles to his feet, pulling Ice Man to a vertical base and delivering a quick snap suplex to keep the pressure on the big man. Ice rolls to the ropes, using them to try to get up as Trent backs off, motioning for Ice Man to get up. Ice does, and Trent clotheslines him, sending both men tumbling over the top rope to the floor. The Legacy Champion rolls over to the barricade as Trent follows him, stomping away as JC drops down from the apron to circle around the ring to them. Phoenix is closer, however, and manages to beat JC there, drilling Trent with a forearm and then greeting JC with one as well. Phoenix then grabs Trent and rolls him back into the ring, following him in as the referee forces JC to return to his corner.
Jake Steel: Oh come on ref, how can you let those two get away with non-sense like that?
Caelan Tyler: Excuse me?
Jake Steel: Double teaming Trent Steel like that! That sort of behavior shouldn't be allowed!
Caelan Tyler: ...Trent was attacking Ice Man, how was that a double team?
Jake Steel: Ice Man was distracting Trent while Phoenix attacked him from behind!
Caelan Tyler: Only you could spin it like that Jake...
Back in the ring, Phoenix stomps on Trent's leg a few times before pulling him up and delivering a back suplex. Trent grabs his back in pain as Phoenix stands back up, positioning himself and delivering a northern lights suplex, bridging it for a pin:
1...
2...
No, Phoenix isn't able to hold the bridge, inadvertently breaking the pin. He curses under his breath, shaking his head as he pulls himself upright.
Caelan Tyler: Looks like Phoenix is definitely still feeling the effects of the attack on him earlier.
Jake Steel: No, he just sucks that badly.
Caelan Tyler: He's a NLW Legend Jake. How many Hall of Fames are you in?
Jake Steel: At least two dozen.
Caelan Tyler: Name one.
Jake Steel: The International Smart Aleck Hall of Fame.
Caelan Tyler: *Sighs*
Both JC and Ice Man have gotten themselves back onto the apron in their respective corners as both Trent and Phoenix are back to their feet, with Trent trying to go for a waistlock. Phoenix does a standing switch, applying a hammerlock into Trent, he does a standing switch himself to get free, bouncing off of the ropes and catching Phoenix with a dropkick that knocks Phoenix back towards The Rogue's corner. Trent tags in JC, who wastes no time in launching Phoenix across the ring with an Irish whip, with Trent dropping him with The Steel Punch! JC goes for the pin as Trent exits the ring:
1...
2...
No, Ice Man breaks it up!
Caelan Tyler: Ice Man making the save that time, although you have to wonder how close to empty both of these men are, as they've taken a beating here, but at least they've been giving it right back to The Rogues.
Jake Steel: Ice Man should've just let it slide. He's not winning the grand slam tonight, and his delays just equal more abuse being put onto Phoenix.
Caelan Tyler: That's a rather humanitarian view for you Jake.
Jake Steel: Nah, I'm just sick of seeing The Phoenix in the ring in front of me, so I want this to be over with.
Caelan Tyler: Just can't appreciate good wrestling, can you Jake?
Jake Steel: Only thing I appreciate is violence.
The referee has Ice Man exit the ring as JC motions to the crowd that he's looking to end the match, picking up Phoenix and lifting the NLW Legend up onto his shoulders, looking to deliver the Solitaire Unreveling. JC's moved too close to the ropes, however, and Phoenix is able to reach out, grabbing the top rope and keeping JC from delivering his finisher. Phoenix pulls himself free, landing on the apron as JC turns to face him. Thinking quickly, Phoenix delivers a shoulder thrust onto The Rogue through the top and middle ropes, then grabs JC by the hair and drops off of the apron, yanking JC's neck down across the ropes with a stun gun! Phoenix slides back into the ring, quickly applying a dragon sleeper to try to keep the pressure on.
Caelan Tyler: All it takes is one slight miscalculation and a veteran with the experience of a guy like The Phoenix can capitalize and regain control of a match, just like he's showing here.
Jake Steel: JC just didn't expect Phoenix to have downed as many Twinkies as he did while NLW was closed, it's a mistake anyone could've made. I mean, I have no idea how much The Phoenix even weighs.
Caelan Tyler: Same as he always has.
Jake Steel: So... 500? 600?
Caelan Tyler: Jake, you get slapped by women whenever they ask you if something makes them look fat, don't you?
Jake Steel: What does that have to do with anything?
Caelan Tyler: Thought so.
Phoenix has the dragon sleeper locked in, wrenching away at JC's neck as Trent enters the ring, breaking the submission up by kicking Phoenix in the back. The NLW Legend stands up, and immediately starts trading fists with Trent, getting the upper hand and tossing him over the top rope to the outside. Unfortunately for Phoenix, this allows JC some time to recover, and JC grabs him, delivering a reverse DDT. JC then pulls him up and whips him into the ropes, powerslamming him on his return back and going for the pin:
1...
2...
No, Phoenix kicks out!
Caelan Tyler: Everyone's really digging deep at this point, with both teams showing how badly they want to win the vacant NLW Tag Team Championships.
Jake Steel: And by that you mean "The Rogues are going to win the vacant NLW Tag Team Championships", right?
Caelan Tyler: I don't mean that at all, I think it could be anyone's game here.
Jake Steel: You would think that. You always see the glass as half full, but me, I see it as empty, 'cause The Phoenix drank it to wash down his late night bag of Oreos you see.
Caelan Tyler: Whatever Jake...
JC tags in Trent, who's sporting a look like a wild animal stalking his prey as he enters the ring, eyeing Phoenix and delivering a few kicks to his side before he grabs Phoenix's legs, Flipping him over and applying The Full Onslaught of X-Treme Prejudice! Phoenix immediately starts to wrathe in pain as Trent locks in the hold, applying all the pressure he can onto Phoenix's back as Ice Man enters the ring, grabbing Trent and launching him across the ring with an overhead belly to belly! JC quickly enters the ring as well, charging Ice Man and sending both men over the top rope to the outside!
Caelan Tyler:Things are starting to break down here Jake!
Jake Steel:Yes! About time! Let's see some abuse! Get up and finish him Trent!
Outside of the ring JC grabs Ice Man, slamming him into the barricade before delivering an open-hand chop across his chest. Ice Man backs away to put some distance between them, but JC follows suit, and the men start trading punches. Inside the ring, both Trent and The Phoenix try to get to their feet, with Trent getting up first, charging Phoenix. Phoenix is prepared though, and he catches Trent with a fireman's carry, lifting him up and delivering his Immolation death valley driver! Phoenix hooks Trent's leg:
1...
2...
No, somehow Trent kicks out!
Caelan Tyler: That was damn close, but Trent just barely managed to get his shoulder up in time.
Jake Steel: Trent's not going to be denied here. He wants to show you and all these fans out here that you don't mess with the son of a...
Caelan Tyler: Jake please, this is a family program!
Jake Steel: Since when?
Caelan Tyler: Since always?
Jake Steel: Really? Never stopped me before!
Both Trent and Phoenix are slow to get up, Trent from having suffered the death valley driver and Phoenix from the wear and tear of the evening, but both men manage to will themselves to their feet, with Trent charging over, attempting to hit a spinning heel kick. Phoenix catches his foot, and holds it for a moment before Trent tries to hit an enziguri. Phoenix ducks under that while holding onto Trent's leg, delivering a dragon screw leg whip! Trent hits the mat, and Phoenix quickly grabs his ankle, applying the Blaze of Glory, grapevining Trent's leg!
Caelan Tyler: Blaze of Glory locked in! Will Trent tap?
Jake Steel: No way, Trent's way too tough!
Caelan Tyler: He's got that locked in, I don't know how Trent will escape.
Jake Steel: JC will bail him out, just wait and see!
Back on the outside, JC has control over Ice Man, slamming him against the barricade again before stepping back, looking to deliver his Big Boot of Death, oblivious to Trent's predictament. Charging Ice Man, he's stunned as the Legacy Champion ducks under the blow, kicking JC in the gut as JC puts on the brakes and turns around. With his opponent doubled over, Ice Man quickly lifts JC up and delivers the ICe Pick, planting JC onto the arena floor! Ice Man gets to his feet, leaving JC lying as he climbs onto the ring apron, looking at Phoenix having the Blaze of Glory locked in. Trent steadfastly refuses to tap, however, trying to get to the ropes. Ice Man sizes the situation up, climbing to the top turnbuckle and launching himself off, pancaking Trent into the mat with his Avalanche frog splash! Phoenix releases the hold, opting to go for a pin instead:
1...
2...
3!
Zach King: Here are your winners... and NEW NLW Tag Team Champions... ICEMAN AND THE PHOENIX!
Caelan Tyler: They did it! I can't believe it, but Ice Man and The Phoenix won! Ice Man just became the first ever Grand Slam champion in NLW history!
Jake Steel: I think I'm going to be sick...
The referee grabs the NLW Tag Team Championships off of the announcers' table, handing them to The Phoenix and The Ice Man, who hold the titles up for the crowd to see, The Phoenix ending his night on a good note as the scene fades to black...

The bell rings as JC steps out of the ring, allowing Trent to start the match with a fired-up Ice Man, who charges the corner, clubbing Trent in the back of the head.
